PRICES TODAY / THE FULL RESEARCH

Once money.
Now collected.

The owl outlived the economy that made it. Today, collectors pay for the particular coin: its type, its surfaces, and how much of that small design survives.

A CURRENT CLASSICAL REFERENCE

$976$1,464

Seven owls.
One reported grade.

Seven classical tetradrachms graded NGC Choice Extremely Fine sold within this range in our May and August 2026 samples. Their median—the middle sale—was $1,067.50. [33] [34]

USD including buyer premium, before tax and shipping. Observed results for other coins, not valuations of the museum specimens shown in this atlas.

THE SAME DESIGN IS NOT THE SAME COIN

Start with the object.
Then the number.

A well-centered Athena, a complete helmet crest, an undisturbed surface: details that help us read an owl also shape its appeal to collectors. A wear grade captures only part of that picture. [36]

For a useful comparison, begin with the same coin family and denomination. Then compare the strike, surfaces and both faces. Keep archaic, classical, Pi-style and New Style results separate.

The graded sample covers Heritage 232622, lots 64014–64025, and 232635, lots 64008–64023: 28 consecutive lots across two selected ranges. Five CNG sales from June–September 2026 add raw VF (Very Fine) and Good VF examples. The original lots remain linked in the ledger. [33] [34] [35]

Why the grades do not form a neat price ladder

The Choice AU sample's median is lower than the AU median because the groups contain different coins. Grade, strike and surface scores do not make two objects identical. NGC grades preservation separately from strike, surfaces and style. [36]

Two additional Mint State coins were described as brushed or having flan flaws. Including them gives seven MS sales at $1,159–$2,379, with a $2,074 median. The five-coin row excludes those stated problems; it does not certify that the remaining coins are problem-free.

These examples suggest firmer prices in 2025–2026 than in the earlier sampled years. With only two to five observations per year, they cannot establish a market-wide growth rate. The values are nominal dollars, not adjusted for inflation. Historical Heritage results include 20% buyer premium; the current sample includes 22%. That fee change alone raises a constant hammer result by about 1.7%.

A CLOSER MATCH / ONE COIN, TWO APPEARANCES

The very same owl, sold twice.

The 2025 catalogue explicitly links this 25 mm, 17.19 g Choice XF owl to its January 2024 sale. Both prices include the same 20% premium. [39]

28% more in buyer price. That is not necessarily a 28% profit. The later $960 result implies an $800 hammer: only $50 above the earlier $750 purchase price, before any seller commission or other expenses. Actual seller proceeds are unknown.

Identity is linked by the catalogue. The earlier archive ends on 18 January; the later provenance cites 17 January. We retain the January 17–18 sale rather than imply an exact date match.

03 / READ THE WHOLE PRICE

The winning bid
is only the beginning.

The hammer is the winning bid. The buyer premium is the auction house's added fee. Tax and shipping come afterward; the seller's proceeds depend on a separate agreement.

AN EXAMPLE AT A 22% PREMIUM

$1,200 hammer
+ $264 buyer premium
= $1,464 before tax and shipping

Heritage's reported realized prices already include the premium. The CNG records here report hammer prices; we added their stated 20% fee. Estimates, dealer asking prices and “Make Offer to Owner” invitations are not completed sales. [38] [35]

04 / MANY FAMILIES, MANY MARKETS

An owl is not
a single price category.

These individual 2026 results belong to different issues and grades. They show why an archaic owl, a Pi-style coin and a New Style tetradrachm need their own comparisons.

These are examples, not family-wide price ranges. We do not yet have enough evidence to price Pi II against Pi III, particular New Style magistrates, regional imitations or rare early varieties. None of these figures values a museum specimen illustrated elsewhere in the atlas.

05 / THE EBAY CATCH

“Sold” does not always
reveal the price.

A public eBay page for a classical NGC AU owl displays $2,338.20 beside a sold banner—but also “or Best Offer” and a relisting notice. We cannot treat that as a verified $2,338.20 transaction. A second sold page shows a different Pi-style coin at $999.99; its payment and offer details are also unverified.

Both are retained in the ledger as displayed prices only. Neither enters the auction statistics. Two observations are not enough to establish an eBay price range.

eBay says Product Research supplies three years of actual sale prices, including accepted offers; ordinary completed searches cover 90 days. That account-based dataset was not available for this research snapshot. [37]

How this snapshot was assembled—and what it cannot tell us

Current Heritage comparisons use two specified consecutive lot ranges, including the coins with listed problems. Historical comparisons are a small, non-random selection of the same reported grade and strike/surface scores at the same auction house. Raw CNG grades are not assumed equivalent to NGC grades. No worldwide average, annual return or price forecast is implied.

Public archive pages were checked on 17 September 2026; some were cached. One August Heritage archive marks a lot sold at $1,442.04 while a cached individual page still shows an earlier live bid. The ledger preserves that conflict and uses the archive result. Several incomplete or conflicting leads were excluded.

No invoice settlement, returns, undisclosed restoration or authenticity was independently verified. Seller net proceeds are unknown. A sell-through rate would also require unsold listings, which this sold-only dataset does not contain.

For a stronger eBay study, actual accepted-offer data should be grouped by type, condition, selling format and period; repeat listings should be deduplicated. Replicas, jewelry, modern bullion and mixed lots need separate treatment. No auction photographs are reproduced here.

This is a dated research snapshot, not a live price feed or an appraisal. The chronological and museum-object dates elsewhere in the atlas remain distinct from auction catalogue descriptions.

The price records a modern sale.
The coin carries a much longer story.
